New Service:

Pagetec, Inc. has launched a new service in response to the many requests we have received from our customers. It seems that many of our customers have trimmed back their technical staffs to the point where they no longer have the in-house talent to support their existing application programs, or to develop new applications. Since we have the experience and the talent to provide a broad range of VersaComp programming support services, we are offering this service to you.

We can provide such support services on an hourly-rate basis, a fixed-price basis, or on an annual retainer basis.

In addition to supporting your existing VersaComp programs, we can assist you in designing and developing new applications.

VersaComp continues to be the leader in composition and pagination capabilities available today. With it you can tailor your production systems to your exact requirements, without having to compromise.

Although XML is not yet as popular as we thought it would be by now, we have considerable experience generating XML files, along with the required XSL and CSS for the browser. And we have built composition and pagination applications using XML tagged files as input and PostScript and PDF for output.

One interesting application that we did recently for one of our customers consisted of building PDF pages from an SGML tagged file, and at the same time building an XML file for his browser. While building the XML file, the program maintained the same page break points, as the page breaks in the PDF file. The PDF page running head data was placed in the XML file as a banner preceding each browser page. Of course, we also provided the XSL and CSS files for the job. Admittedly, this application is a rather unusual one, but it does demonstrate some of the many capabilities of VersaComp.

VersaComp continues to be the best composition and pagination engine available for generating a wide range of applications, from very simple applications to very complex ones. VersaComp makes it possible for you to have complete automation, while producing the highest-quality output available anywhere.

The Pagetec staff has considerable experience in designing systems, writing specifications, and in developing systems.

Release 5.5 of Versacomp shipped during February of 2003.
Changes since Release 5.4 are in several basic areas as follows:

New Features:

$FEATURE Descriptor
Added a new descriptor named $FEATURE. This allows the user to embed special printer features into the PostScript output file.

PDFIMG Statement
Added a new statement named PDFIMG. This will merge a single PDF image onto your page. Can be used with PDF like eps is used with PostScript.

PBCOLOR Statement
Added a new statement named PBCOLOR. This will allow the user to select the background color of a page to improve readability.

COMPDBC Statement
Added a new statement named COMPDBC (Compose Double-Byte Coding) that will compose Unicode files for Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese (CJKV) languages. For such files, each character to be composed is represented with a 2-byte code.

SEARCH2 Statement
Added a new statement named SEARCH2. This is a new search command that will search CJKV unicode strings.

Enhancements:

MRGIMG Statement
Added a new parameter to the B= operand of the MRGIMG statement. B=C will now clip the eps image to the Bounding Box size. The MRGIMG statement replaces the ART5 statement which may still be used.

IMGINFO Statement
Added PDF files to the IMGINFO statement. The IMGINFO statement replaces the ART5 statement which may still be used.

$PRINT Descriptor
Modified the $PRINT descriptor to output the expression on every page.

New General Variables
Added 999 new general variables. These are addressed by using a double quote and the gv number. Ex: "GV1 thru "GV999

File Names
When running under a Windows system all files used may now have embedded blanks in their names.

Product Announcement:

VERSACOMP Director Program

Windows Users: Take a look at Versacomp Director, a user-friendly Windows Application program that facilitates the running of Versacomp programs in a Windows Environment.

Director is interactive and assists the user in the creation of job control files, similar to Batch files, to control Versacomp application programs. Jobs may then be easily initiated using a few mouse clicks.

Versacomp Director controls Versacomp application programs that use the following Versacomp drivers:

PostScript
PDF for Adobe Acrobat
Dual PostScript / PDF

Director is available at no charge to Pagetec Clients who use Versacomp in a Windows environment, and who are on Versacomp Maintenance.
